12v Solar Gel Battery is a deep-cycle sealed battery lead-acid battery (the other is an AGM battery). These two varieties have low maintenance costs and are suitable for intermittent use-making them a better choice for backup power sources and off-grid holiday cottages than submerged lead-acid batteries-although similar, they are not the same.
The advantage of 12v Solar Gel Battery over AGM for renewable energy storage is longer cycle life and lower cycle cost per kilowatt-hour.
Technical information of 12v Solar Gel Battery
The gel electrolyte used in the 12v Solar Gel Battery is very viscous, and the recombination speed of the gas generated during the charging process is much slower than that of the AGM battery. If you charge the gel battery at an excessively high rate, air pockets will form on the battery plate, pushing the electrolyte away from the plate and reducing the battery capacity until the gas reaches the top of the battery and recombines with the electrolyte.
The practical effect here is that 12v Solar Gel Battery must generally charge more slowly than AGM or flooded lead-acid batteries. Since in a solar photovoltaic system, you are limited by the number of solar hours per day and need to store all solar watts before the sun goes down, if you use gel cells, you may need to slightly increase the size of the battery pack. This fact makes gel batteries more suitable for hydropower and wind energy systems.
