Porsche Will Now Let You Customise A Watch
The relationship between luxury watches and luxury cars has always been a fruitful one, and one derived from similar philosophies of precise, aesthetic-driven engineering. Both pursuits are about marrying the worlds of high performance and high beauty as closely as possible, and have together produced some stunning timepieces over the years. No brand, however, has taken the step of bringing its own watch manufacturing in-house. When car companies and watch brands collaborate, for example the recent Jacob & Co. x Bugatti release, the actual process of making the watch is left to the experts. However Porsche Design, the arm of the German supercar manufacturer that covers everything from fashion to interior design, does things a little bit differently.
Porsche Design has made everything from luxury watches to motorsport-inspired clothes and sneakers for some time now, but a new integration between the sub-brand and Porsche's automotive design unit now means that Porsche fanatics lucky enough to be taking delivery of a new 911 can now get a Porsche Design timepiece to exactly match their new sports car.The custom build service will allow potential clients to curate the case colour, strap, stitching, dial ring and bezel, and rear rotor of the company's Chronotimer Series 1 timepieces. Over 1.5 million different configurations are possible, all of which can be tinkered with through the use of a new online configurator based on Porsche's 911 car configurator.Everyone's dream of their own Porsche 911 is different. Just like the dream of your own Porsche Design Chronograph," reads Porsche Design's website. "Thanks to a wide variety of configuration options, you can design your own watch perfectly tailored to your liking. All available configuration options are derived from the Porsche 911."
All of Porsche Design's watches are built at the brand's Swiss-Based, purpose-built watch factory - a potential surprise to many who would assume that Porsche outsource the production of the timepieces to another, larger company. The German brand, however, insists that keeping production in-house alllows them to make their watches "in line with Porsche production principles and the quality typical of Porsche."A custom Chronotimer Series 1 will set you back around $6,000 USD. Deliveries of the timepieces will begin in September this year, with the roll-out of the customisation service set to commence in dealers globally after that.
