Frank Bedo, Best Buy senior vice president, told USA TODAY the brands the company is working with "are completely changing sustainable transportation and making it more accessible for everyone."More customers also are looking for "ways to efficiently and sustainably commute," Bedo said. “As we grow this selection, we look forward to helping customers find the right products to fit their needs and supporting them as they hit the road safely."

A 2018 National Institute for Transportation and Communities study found electric bikes appeal to a wider pool of riders than conventional bicycles, including older adults and those with physical limitations.According to market research firm NPD Group, bikes and the electric bicycle category saw sales increase as people spent more time outdoors in socially distant activities. Year-over-year bicycle sales in the U.S. ending April 2021 were up 57%.

“The demand for alternative modes of transit is at an all time high,” David Hyman, Unagi CEO and founder, said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Having transportation options available at people’s fingertips, like Unagi’s high performance scooters, will not only help with the return to school and work, but will set a new standard in micromobility, while also cutting down our reliance on cars.”Brian Buccella, the company’s senior vice president of consumer products and policy, said in a statement to USA TODAY that Best Buy will be the first retailer to offer its new Bird Bike. It’s also for sale on the Bird website.

Together, Best Buy and Bird are helping bring awareness and access to micro electric vehicles that are replacing millions of gas-powered car trips and decreasing emissions and traffic-related congestion in our communities,” Buccella said.

For select electric bikes, Best Buy said that for $99.99, the Geek Squad can “safely assemble and help customers fine-tune their bikes, at the convenience of the customer’s own home." Services include adjusting brakes, seat height and handlebars.
