Irish parents warned about use of blackout blinds in children's bedrooms

Blackout blinds are often used to block out daylight in a child's bedroom, ensuring they sleep through the night or nap peacefully during the day. However, following the recent heatwave a number of parents reported that their windows had broken.

An Irish window company said that this is because the heat gets trapped in the blind and can cause your window frame to expand.A spokesperson from Expert Windows, who are based in Dublin, told RSVP Live : "Dark colours absorb heat, so if you have a dark blind that's going to cause your window to heat up.

"It depends on the type of window that you have, and the age of the window. But if you have a PVC window frame, PVC can expand so you could get cracks in the glass."

They warned parents not to leave blackout blinds pulled down throughout the day as this can cause a build-up of heat and condensation. One mother, Hayley Neal, discovered that the window in her daughter's bedroom had cracked after she used a blackout blind.

She shared a picture of the cracked window saying that she went to go and take the blackout blind down after she had seen a warning on Instagram but then realised the window was already broken.Hayley warned other people saying: "My daughter’s bedroom is in direct sunlight most days, but the current weather will definitely cause this to happen to other people!
