Runes are an item introduced in the Lord of Destruction expansion. Runes can be inserted into nested items, adding various modifiers to those items. The modifiers added by a particular rune depend on the type of rune used and the type of item inserted (weapon, shield, armor, or helmet). Runes inserted into items cannot be restored, but they can be destroyed to free any busy sockets.
What's most striking about runes is their ability to create powerful rune words when inserted into the correct item type and order. They are also used in the transmutation of some Horadric Cube, including crafting and upgrading.
